Comments: This ghost town is just outside of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. It is north of where US 89 crosses the river off a direct road in Sand Gulch, 42 miles east of Kanab. Adairville was located on the Paria River 8 miles downstream from Pahreah. The town was named for Thomas Adair, one of the first settlers of this area. Adairville was one of the most isolated settlements in Southern Utah. It never had much of a chance because the spring floods kept washing it away. It was abandoned by the early 1920s.
There is only 1 burial of Emma Adair Goodrich. Emma became ill while living at Pahreah and was taken several miles down Pahreah Creek to her fathers home at Adairville. While there she passed away and was buried east of Thomas Jefferson Adair's home.

Comments: Alta was incorporated in 1970. There is no official cemetery and there is no visible cemetery, no headstones, no evidence whatsoever.
However, there are historical records of death and murders in Alta with subsequent burials and a rich oral tradition supporting Alta’s cemetery.
The cemetery, known as the Boots On cemetery is in the flat area below Alta’s steep and famous “High Rustler” ski run just east of the ticket sales building.
Folklore talks about 110 people being buried in Boot Hill, half of which were killed in gunfights.
The Utah Daughters of the Pioneers have a plaque that is put up along the road every summer near the beginning of a hiking trail that states there are 110 people buried in Boots On cemetery who were killed in gunfights, with another 140 headstones of residents killed by avalanche. Re: the avalanche deaths, there are accounts of victims being sledded out of the canyon and buried in the SLC cemetery or being sent back east for burial since the ground was frozen and covered with snow making it too hard to bury the victims in Alta. Again, none of that is verifiable or visible, but is very common legend.
Elbert Despain, an old miner in the canyon whose family settled the mouth of the canyon now known as Granite, spoke of another cemetery.
Elbert worked in the mines and after the mines closed he ran the little tourist mine car operation. In his later years, Elbert delivered the mail from the Sandy post office to Alta’s little contract post office.
One day he told the story of another cemetery and pointed east toward the end of the paved road and the Grizzly Gulch area.
That cemetery was for the Chinese laborers and the ladies of the evening because they were not allowed to be buried in the Boots On cemetery.
There is no evidence of that cemetery either.

Comments: American ForkÂ’s first cemetery was located at 300 N. 100 E. It was used during the years of 1852-1868. The old pioneer cemetery is now a park. Located on the south-east corner of the park is a monument with the names of those who are buried there. The American Fork City Cemetery is located at 600 North Center Street in American Fork.
People of note who are buried here include: Martin Hansen, the man who discovered Timpanogos Cave; Edward Robinson, the worldÂ’s first railroad conductor; Arza Adams and Stephen Chipman, founding fathers of American Fork.
Of special historical interest to our cemetery is the rock wall on the south and east side of the cemetery. This wall was constructed during 1937-38 as a WPA project. The stones are from the surrounding area and are mostly quartzite, sandstone, and marble. The wall is approx. 1580 feet long. There is a historical plaque at the main entrance.

Comments: Antimony is a town in Garfield County, Utah. The population was 122 at the 2010
Antimony is four miles south of the Otter Creek Reservoir.
In early 1873 about twenty-two men, including A K Thurber and George Bean, arrived here while on a
peace-keeping mission with the Fish Lake Indians. They had agreed to meet the
Indians at Cedar Grove near Koosharem. While near the present site of Antimony they caught and earmarked several coyote pups. This incident led to the area's first name-Coyote.
The meadowlands were used as early as 1873 for grazing but several families
moved in 1878.
In 1880 antimony (stibnite), a metal used in alloys, was discovered in nearby Coyote
Canyon, so Coyote became a mining town as well as a ranching community. In 1921 the town of Coyote was renamed Antimony after the metal mined in the area.

The mortuary was added in July 1933, the Mausoleum in 1935 and the crematory in 1937. Mr. Harbertson changed the name to Aultorest (All-to-rest) in 1938. In 1946, the abandoned Mountain View Cemetery was purchased from John Guthrie Haywood. In 1948 Thomas T. Leavitt married Lynnette Harbertson, who was James Harbertson's daughter, and in 1958 they purchased the property and changed its name to Leavitt's Chapel of Flowers Mortuary and Autorest Memorial Park. Burials in Aultorest began in 1929, but the Mountain View section dates back to the late 1800s.

Comments: Aurora was founded in 1875 by Ezra White (or Ezra Curtis, according to some accounts)
and three other families along the banks of the Sevier River. Aurora's settling came under the direction of Brigham Young. He called on families to settle South Central Utah.
Originally named Willow Bend, the name was changed to Aurora due to the presence of the Northern Lights. The city was moved west two to three miles along the Rocky Ford Canal to avoid the spring flooding accompanied life along the Sevier. This location also enabled significant cultivation of the foothills.

Comments: Originally referred to as the "Bountiful Burying Ground," with the bishop as the owner of record. After the Bountiful Ward split into three wards, a sexton position was created. Bountiful City took over the cemetery in 1939. Water lines were installed, grass was planted, and other improvements were made.
Records Status: Records are more accurate since 1939 when the City took over the cemetery. Records prior to 1892 (when sexton began using ledger) were recreated at that time and are not completely accurate. Early infant records seem to be the most incomplete.
The far north end and south half of the map are fairly accurate. The older section of the cemetery (Plats A & B) are somewhat accurate. The western part of A & B is more accurate than the eastern part, which is the oldest part of the cemetery whre family lot sizes are not all standard.

Comments: Records Status: Cemetery records are non-existent. The only records of deaths are from the Register of Enlistments and Regimental Returns for the soldiers at Camp Floyd maintained by the War Department and located at the National Archives.
Map Information: We have multiple maps. Some are views of the cemetery in relation to the rest of Camp Floyd and some are maps of the cemetery itself.
Additional Info: Army cemetery for Camp Floyd established in 1858. Last used in 1861, as the camp was abandoned due to the beginning of the Civil War. 84 headstones were placed by the American Legion in 1960. In reality, there are probably only as many as 47 burials according to Army records. Ground penetrating radar was conducted in 2009 and located 35 burials. There may be others, as the radar only went to the modern fence, whereas the old fence has about 2 more feet around. But it's not likely that as many as 12 more burials would be found.

Comments: Around 1982 the property owners Castle Valley River Rancheros handed over the land for a cemetery to the Grand County Cemetery District.
The Moab Times-Independent reported that 3 years previously the untimely death of Guy Officer prompted a 2nd burial in this site. At the time the lonely burial of Eliza Parriott Hatch was on that land surrounded by a black iron fence.
Eliza Parriott Hatch is not listed among those in the Castle Valley Cemetery, but is in what is now referred to as DayStar Cemetery due to its proximity to the DayStar Academy.

Comments: Up the Colorado River road (Highway 128) from Moab was the community of Castleton, which once vied with Moab for the county seat. This was a small mining town of over 100 people in the early 1890s and was the hub of activity for ranches and other small villages in the area. Little remains today of the town that once boasted 2 saloons, 1 hotel, 2 grocery stores, a post office and a school.

Comments: A wooden marker reads: "Chief Greenjacket. A Friend of Boys. BSA Troop 489, GSL (Greater Salt Lake) Council, 11-58 (November 1958)." The grave is located on private property, and permission must be received from the Mitchell family prior to entry. Greenjacket died when he about sixty years of age.
Chief Greenjacket was a chief of a local tribe of Goshute Indians that lived south of the current town of Vernon. When the Bennion family moved into the area to establish a cattle and sheep ranch, about 1863, the father, Israel Bennion, was befriended by the Goshutes. Chief Greenjacket informed them that their original ranch site was unsuitable in winter, and that it was likely they would all die if they stayed there. He guided them to a valley where the Bennion Ranch is today. Greenjacket was considered as the equal of any white person in tact, integrity, and sensitivity to others, and his presence among whites gave them reassurance, not fear, of the Goshutes' presence. Under Greenjacket's influence, the Goshutes became good friends with the whites who settled in the area, and relations between whites and Indians were always good. About 1865, he noticed some Ute Indians preparing to kill the families of John Bennion, who had just moved into Bennion Canyon. He got the Utes to change their minds by telling them the whites were under his protection, and then he got them to move to his winter camp where the Goshutes could protect them. The Bennion family would settle near to the Goshute Winter Camp, where their ranch is today. Chief Green Jacket then taught the family how to survive in the hostile desert environment. Settler David Sharp was the last to see Green Jacket alive. In 1874, he saw Greenjacket go up a hill, and Sharp waved at him, but he ignored the salutation. When Sharp asked other Indians that day what was up, he was told that Greenjacket was going off to die. His body was later found on the hill where he is now buried, and is now named for him. (Bio by Kit and Morgan Benson, with the grateful assistance of Frost Bennion Mitchell).

Comments: Agnes McGregor Cutler, young widow of Harmon Cutler, appealed to the U.S. Smelter to respect that plot of ground. They did and routed their railroad tracks around it. Rumored this was also a historic Indian burial site.
In the early 1900s US Smelter paid $10 a body to have them moved to a different cemetery. In 1912 floods washed bodies out of graves. In 1942 the Smelter dumped 52,000 tons of toxic material on top of the pioneer and Indian cemetery.
After the EPA clean up and community effort to landscape all the headstones (minus one) disappeared and there whereabouts are still unknown.

Comments: Many burials here are mixed in with Castle Valley Cemetery. Efforts to provide accurate accounts of burials is difficult due to no active management or recordkeeping.
Those burials in this area not officially noted as buried in Castle Valley Cemetery by the cemetery district are now listed under DayStar due to their proximity to DayStar Academy.
Eliza Parriott Hatch was the first burial on these grounds in 1898. Her burial is surrounded by a black iron fence.

Comments: "A small plot of ground on top of a knoll two-and-a-half miles south of Marysvale, Piute County, is the burial ground for 13 persons. The cemetery, known locally as Dennis Cemetery, is surrounded by a crude wire fence, which sets it off from the rest of the landscape.
There are no markers to distinguish the graves. Here lies buried one of the first settlers, William T. Dennis, a prospector who became a homesteader when the excitement of a gold rush ended. The cemetery posed a problem to the Utah State Road Commission when a new and wider highway was constructed from Marysvale to Junction in 1961. The Antiquity Law, which provides for protection of archaeological finds and natural landscapes made it necessary for the Road Commission to alter its plans slightly to by-pass the cemetery. The plot now lies within the highway right-of-way, just a few feet from the edge of the hard surface road." (Salt Lake Tribune – 1965)

They don’t mind people going up to see it, but ask that people stay on the drive all the way up to the cemetery and not go on the circle driveway in front of their house. When you drive in from the I-15 frontage road, the road to their house is visible, and the road up to the cemetery is to the north of that a little bit.
This is the earliest Plymouth Cemetery and it is in the hills east of Washakie. The headstones have crumbled and many are unidentifiable. It has a wood post fence around it, 22' x 42'.

Comments: The death certificate of Edmond E Price (d. 1904) lists his passing and burial in Westwater, Utah. The undertake was ArLee Gourley from Grand Junction, Colorado.
Westwater, Utah is a ghost town that operated primarily as ranching land from 1890s-1940s. "Upstream from Moab on the Colorado River, near the Colorado state line, there is a relatively short, deep canyon that has become one of the most popular river-running destinations in America. Near the head of the canyon are the remnants of the tiny town of Westwater, which has had an interesting and eventful history of its own, partly because of the river and canyon, partly because of the railroad that passes through it, and partly because of its remoteness." ~ExpeditionUtah

"ON the 18th of the month, Mrs. Eliza Peterson, wife of Mons Peterson died in
Monticello. She was a daughter of President Hammond who, we may have
noticed, arrived in town with the Indian Commissioners the day before. The
funeral was held in the dooryard of the little home, and being the first occasion
of its kind Monticello, it cast a gloom of lonliness over the town, a gloom which
seemed somehow to be associated with the heavy frost, the first of the
season, which blackened the leaves that night."

At a later date after a number of burials had taken place, the ground at the cemetery sank several feet and the bodies buried there had to be moved while the ground was flooded and settled, after which the bodies were returned to their original site.

Comments: It is recorded that in the early years of the Pioneer Cemetery, there was a flood which washed through the cemetery taking away some headstones. The early records recorded were burials were in the cemetery, but no plots were designated. A lot of the headstones in the cemetery are very weathered. you cannot read them, or they are broken, fallen over or totally missing. Some graves are just marked with a stone. material used for the old headstones were sandstone, wood and limestone. These have not held up to the ravishes of time.

Comments: As was the case with most pioneer towns, Ferron suffered from typhoid an diptheria epidemics. Typhoid broke out in the fall of 1885 and by the following spring word came that two had died of diptheria. By the end of that week, the disease had taken 13 lives, many of which were children. Some families buried several children in a matter of days or weeks.
Beautiful pine trees were planted by several different groups throughout the early history of Ferron. A group of women felt that the sparse, uninviting burial hill wasn't the place on which they wanted to bury their loved ones, so they enlisted their husbands to go to the mountains to get pine trees to plant in the cemetery.

Comments: Founded as a cattle rustling and outlaw community in the 1850s, the town of Garrison later became the center of mining interests. Garrison was originally named Snake Creek, but the name was later changed to Garrison which comes from the Garrison family who farmed in the area. After mining interests subsided, the Garrisons had a livestock and hay ranch.
Mrs. Garrison was a schoolteacher who also handled the mail, and the town's name honors her.
Information gathered from Sexton records, family genealogies & Utah Death Certificates.
